I wish I were joking. [12 Mar 2009|01:51pm]
So, a cheetah walks into a bar, and the barman says, "Hey, spotty. Why the long face?"

The cheetah replies, "Well, they gave me a new desktop computer at work. The computer's fine, but it's got a terrible Belkin keyboard."

"Really? I didn't know Belkin make keyboards now."

"And as far as I'm concerned, they still don't!"

*rage*

This isn't even just a 'bad' keyboard.

It is utterly unusable and unsuitable for anything except taking up space on a desk. And it even disappoints at doing that.

Just in case anyone ever needs to know. [07 Mar 2009|11:52pm]
My favourite drink is the 'Godfather'.

There are many variants, pretty much just playing with the ratio of scotch to amaretto. Some do 2:1, some do it 1:1, some do 1:2.

Me?

Godfather
* Equal parts Talisker scotch and Disaronno amaretto. I suppose any brand of amaretto is fine, tho. So long as it's not crap.
* Exactly two (2) ice cubes.
* Served in an old fashioned glass, as with all scotch drinks.

Benny Hillifier! [18 Feb 2009|11:35pm]
The Benny Hillifier is the greatest website ever created in the history of the Internet(tm).

Feed it Youtube URL fragments and it turns any dull and dreary video into a hilarious Benny Hill thingy!

It turns [this video] of a speed-slalom world record into [this brilliant version] for example!

It can even tackle sobering [aircraft crash compilations]!

Is there nothing Yakety Sax can't do?

Victorian bushfires. [10 Feb 2009|12:47am]
http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2009/02/08/2485616.htm

To those affected by the Yarra Ranges bushfires,

As a member of both the Motorcyclist community and the Furry community, both groups who over the years have greatly enjoyed the continued hospitality of the townships within the Yarra Ranges; I would like to extend my deepest condolences to all affected by the recent bushfires, and am sorry for your loss.

Although the magnitude of this disaster will leave a lingering scar for years to come, I am pleased to see the haste with which both of these communities, and indeed many others, are rallying to extend their support and hospitality to those who have lost their homes, belongings and loved ones. I, too, will be offering my support.

Playing with bokeh [05 Jan 2009|11:44pm]
(Cross posted to [info]camerafurs)

bokehpaw003

Just recently I visited Perth for New Year's Eve - one of the traditions over there is to stuff around with long-exposure light painting with LEDs and laserpointers, etc.

This year I thought it'd be cool to make up custom bokeh filters for the lens and play with custom bokeh; see what happens when a laser trail is drawn with the filter in place, etcetera. It's something I've wanted to do for a long long time now but never really bothered with.

Anyhow - although we had a lot of fun at the NYE party playing with light, tonight I thought I'd get a few fursuit photos of the Wollongong cityscape with [info]weasely's help to better show off the effect and demonstrate how the custom bokeh has no effect on the in-focus subject or in-focus highlights.

Stars to smile down on Australia [01 Dec 2008|03:14pm]
9pm AEDT tonight, Venus, Jupiter and the crescent-shape moon will form a smiley emoticon in the west-south-western sky above Australia.

This formation apparently won't be visible from Europe or USA (though europe gets an inocculation or something, says gaz_a)

Tonight's DIY Show-and-tell [26 Nov 2008|11:22pm]
[ mood | industrious ]

Tonight I hacked my two old Vivitar 285HV flashes using this diagram as a guide.

So now instead of being collared and leashed to the proprietary Vivitar sync plug standard, the flashes now accept standard 3.5mm mono sync plugs. :)

Most importantly, that means they now accept the so-nicknamed 'Poverty Wizard' radio slaves I bought the other day for the princely sum of $40AUS! Prrprrprr.

And here's the first photo taken with the radio slave + hacked sync jack setup:

Really happy with how they turned out!

Quick vote [24 Nov 2008|12:32pm]
Atpaw's spots need to be reapplied since they've faded a bit in the wash.

There's a little less than 3 weeks to midfur event.

Do I repaint the spots (2-3 nights work), or put my copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey on endless repeat and surgically replace each painted spot with a patch of black fur?

What did you do on the weekend? [03 Nov 2008|06:29pm]
(Cross-posted to [info]furry_bikers here)

I did this:
Wollongong -> Albion Park (McDonalds breakfast) -> Batemans Bay -> Narooma (beef, bacon and cheese pie) -> Narooma -> Bermagui -> Pambula -> Cann River -> Orbost -> Bonang -> Bombala (stayed overnight) -> Pambula -> Bermagui (burger with the lot) -> Bega -> Cooma -> Snowy Mountain Highway -> Khancoban -> Tintaldra (stayed overnight) -> Tumba-bloody-rumba shootin' kanga-bloody-roos -> Tumut (big breakfast) -> o/` On the Road to Gundagai o/` -> Goulburn -> Robertson (mm, pie shop... beef, bacon and cheese pie for me; the Tiger1050 ate a Ducati ST3 on the Pass) -> Home.

24 of us (10 from NSW, 11 from VIC, 3 from ACT) met up in Bombala for the annual 4 Musketeers ride and zoomed around together on Sunday before parting ways on Monday (today). Great company, great roads and the weather (mostly) behaved for us. And no phone reception for most of the weekend either!

The Tiger never ceases to amaze me with its capabilities as a sports-touring bike.

Biggest Highlights (for Australian bikerfurs and visitors from overseas):
[Orbost to Bombala, via Bonang]: Only five of us took this road, and wow was it worth it! 90 kilometres of well-surfaced relentless 50-80kph cornering speed twisty road with barely a straight in sight. Left right left right left right right right left left right left right... Brief well-maintained hardpacked dirt road intermission, followed by the Second Act; Left right left right left right right right left left right left right... Well and truely Tiger Country. Amazing.

[Brown Mountain, between Cobargo and Nimmitabel]: Leaving Cobargo and climbing the highway gradually toward the Great Dividing Range, you realise that the GPS says you're only at an altitude of 150 metres - you've got to climb another 800m onto the Great Dividing Range at some point. And then you get to Brown Mountain. Climbing 800 metres in less than 9 kilometres, Brown Mountain's corners are tight and relentless, without becoming difficult hairpins. Good visibility and confident road surface makes for a lot of fun and confident lean angles as you zoom up the mountain side! SQUIGGLY! (Pity about the boring Monaro Highway afterwards...)

[Snowy Mountain Highway]: Educational and twisty. The Snowy Mountain Highway weaves its way through some of the hilliest terrain Australia has to offer, making its way through the Snowy River Hydroelectric Scheme's dams and power stations and along some pretty spectacular vistas. Only downside is that once the road tightens up a little for the 108-kilometre winding road, almost all of the corners are totally blind and have no marked centreline - Beware of oncoming corner-cutting motorcyclists, sports cars and tourist-mobiles using the entire road! :S

[Bombala to Wyndham, Mt Darragh Road]: Mt Darragh road is home to a miniature version of the Bonang Road. It may be a petit 29km, but it's amusingly twisty. Questionable road surface in places and some overly-blind corners does spoil it a little.

[Macquarie Pass]: Current stomping grounds of the Tiger 1050. Uphill's nicer, but with a bit of confidence and faith and practice it's possible to hustle through the 10km of twisties smoothly either way. The Famous Robertson Pie Shop has outstanding pies, too. <3

Australian Top Gear [13 Oct 2008|07:47pm]
I wonder if one day they'll go all 'meta' and pin the What Were They Thinking board to itself.

(Constructive criticism: It's got the potential to be a good idea, but something about it seems a bit 'forced'. The tone of voice? The discussion (or lack of)? Hmm.)

Top Gear Australia test-track [01 Oct 2008|03:39pm]
Useless trivia for friends who were curious: Top Gear Australia's test track is made up from the taxiways of Camden Airport in NSW (about 60km from Sydney and Wollongong), not far from where I bought my new motorcycle.

So now you know!

Top Gear Australia thoughts [29 Sep 2008|09:59pm]
'sorite, really.

After some discussion with friends, "we" have come to the conclusion that:
(1) Top Gear Australia flits from segment to segment too rapidly; it would be nice to see a bit more depth and a slower pace ala Top Gear UK. I suspect perhaps that since this is their first episode they wanted things to be "Wowee-Zowie!" and fit in all their wild new segments in at once rather than pacing things properly. I guess we'll know next week.

(2) They really need to run a cleaner-truck over their "test track" - holy crap, the dust being kicked up by the cars!!

(3) The presenters seem to be acting a bit wild and zany, too soon (as [info]gaz_a described, "before they've made their mark"). The younger presenter's accent/voice grates on me a bit - reminds me of Frank Woodley (of Lano and Woodley fame), except Lano and Woodley are a comedy act and therefore an annoying voice adds to the humour.

Thoughts?

Trackmania [02 Sep 2008|10:51pm]
[ mood | pleased ]

In other news, my 'official' time for the final track of Trackmania:Nations Forever has been accepted. I'm now one of four people in Australia to have even completed the track, and 58th in the world for that track.

Not sure what to say, really! "It's only a game..." comes to mind. :)

I'm content. At least, until Trackmania DS comes out. ;)

The 28th Annual Mild-Autumn-Day-during-a-remarkably-lengthy-solar-eclipse Ride [19 Aug 2008|10:22pm]

This was a really difficult ride report to write.

It was that time of the year again. Middle of July. Middle of Australian winter. Time for another midnight-til-dawn mystery ride through the state of Victoria!

Short post [30 Jun 2008|12:35am]
[ mood | sleepy ]

Aussiehusky's birthday (last night) was fun! Happy birthday again! Thanks for having us over and such! Got to play SuperSmashBrothersBrawl for the first time. Some fun new characters, some fun rounds. And ate Paris Brest, which I haven't had in a long time - Aussie's was as good as any other I've had, even the fancy ones. :)

I've been preparing Stratocat for the trip to RivFur - the upcoming Brisbane furmeet. This'll be my first time attending Rivfur. Should be fun!

Stratocat's been kitted out with lockable luggage, and a Starcom1 commucations/audio system. It was good to use Aussie's party as an excuse to give the bike a shakedown - deliberately packing it with more than I expect to take to Rivfur - in order to work out what's ergonomically poor, what 'bugs' have to be fixed. Quite a few things got relocated to be easier to operate, more comfortable. Better to have problems during a 120km ride than the 1000+km ride coming up!

Big fuzzy thanks to [info]kysh for suggesting a happier, more ergonomic home for the push-to-talk radio button. MUCH better.

I'll get photos of the fully-loaded bike soon, for posterity. Can't help but feel a little like Ewen McKenobi and Charlie Whatshisface, with most of the stuff in the garage - including the MR2 - pushed to the side to make space so I can work on Stratocat and leave my pre-packed luggage with the bike. Fully-fuelled, fully-packed, ready to go as soon as the clock says "it's time". Daggy, I know. :P

It's 12:35am on Monday. That leaves tonight and tomorrow night to do some quick fursuit maintenance and check over the bike one last time. Wednesday night, staging up for the convoy. Thursday morning, Taubu (and passenger) and I head to Rivfur.

Olderererer. [29 May 2008|11:45pm]
Pretty uneventful birthday, in all. Work was surprisingly tame today, which is a nice switch - My workload's been an utter trainwreck for the last few days.

Weasely came over 'n cooked me dinner for my birthday, which was nice. :) Marinated scotch fillet steak. Omm nomm nomm.

And, of course, what birthday wouldn't be complete without trying to feed cake to Atpaw? (fursuit photos) )
